One of our most common repairs is for a garage door that has come off track. This usually is a direct result of the door coming down on an object, or operating the garage door with a spring that is under-tensioned. Your garage door should be checked annually to insure proper balance of the lift system. If the spring tension is weak, then the torsion cables will go slack near the top of the door travel. This can lead to a cable coming off of the drum and getting tangled up on the torsion tube. The opposite cable will then be pulling the garage door with the full force of the spring, while the loose cable allows the door to drop a few inches. As a result, the entire door will go crooked, possibly bending the track, a few rollers will pop out, and the garage door will be jammed within it's tracks. Avoid moving the door to straighten, as this will most likely cause more damage. Be aware that a door that is overhead can completelty fall out of the tracks and come falling down with crushing force. Nine times out of ten, your out-of-track garage door can be repaired quite easily without having to replace the door. Without the help of the torsion spring lift system, a garage door is extremely difficult to lift. All springs eventually will break. Springs are generally rated to last 10,000 cycles. For most people that translates to about 7 to 10 years. If your spring has broken in less time, while under normal use, then you may have an improperly rated spring for the size of your garage door. We will always provide you with the correct size torsion spring(s) so that you can expect as many years of use as possible. It is not recommended to try and open your door by hand, or by opener, if you have a broken spring. Attempting to use your garage door opener without the assistance of the springs can damage the trolley, rail, gear, or motor. If you do succed in opening the door, be aware that disengaging the opener by pulling the pull rope will allow the door to come crashing down to the ground with deadly force.
